July 3, 2008 - Fireworks account for a substantial number of preventable injuries and fires each year, especially around the Fourth of July. Parents need to ensure children do not possess fireworks or mishandle legal ones. The safest way to enjoy them is through public displays. U.S. Fire Administrator Gregory Cade said, "Fireworks become bigger, brighter, and more dangerous each year. By taking some simple steps for safety, those choosing to use fireworks can ensure they will not end their celebrations by seeking medical treatment for injuries by their use." Read more at USFA.DHS.gov ICE Fugitive Operations Team Arrests 48 Illegal Aliens in 5 DaysJune 27, 2008 (Garden City, Kan.) - A local team of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested 48 criminal, fugitive aliens and immigration violators in western Kansas as part of a five-day operation. Thirty-six of those arrested had previous criminal convictions, and are from El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Vietnam. Kenneth Carlson, assistant field office director of the Kansas City Office of Detention and Removal Operations, stated, "Anyone who ignores a judge's deportation order will be located, arrested and returned to their country of origin."
