Creating Detection Standards and Evaluating Systems

The SAFE Port Act of 2006 directs the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) to develop technical capability standards and recommended standard operating procedures for nuclear and radiation detection equipment. In collaboration with the National Institute of Science and Technology, DNDO provides leadership in the development of national standards relating to nuclear detection technologies.

Standards are critical to ensuring that nuclear detection systems that are being developed and acquired by the Department and its federal, state and local partners meet basic performance, functionality, and operability criteria. Adherence to standards -- validated through testing -- ensures sound investments and effective technologies. Standards are modified and updated on a regular basis to ensure relevancy, completeness, accuracy and consistency.

DNDO also serves as a leader to ensure consolidated policy development and standards for non-technology areas related to the nuclear security mission. This includes preventive radiological and nuclear detection training, exercises and investment planning. This approach helps DHS operational components and state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to develop capabilities that are consistent with the Global Nuclear Detection Architecture and its implementation strategy.
