Still Time to Contribute to a GreenGov

President Obama signed an executive order earlier this month instructing all federal agencies to develop plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by year 2020. The Department of Homeland Security is already a leader in this area, thanks in part to our Efficiency Review that Secretary Napolitano launched in March to make the Department a leaner, smarter agency better equipped to protect the nation.
As part of the Efficiency Review, the Department is already taking important steps to build a green culture. For example, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is configuring its computers to automatically shut down or stand by when they are not being used. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will use solar power to reduce energy usage at its new border patrol station in El Paso. And the new Coast Guard headquarters will be LEED-certified and incorporate a number of innovative, environmentally friendly design features.
There's no doubt there are many more ideas out there.
The President's GreenGov Challenge is a great way to help us find and implement them - at the Department of Homeland Security and across the federal government. Please visit www.WhiteHouse.gov/GreenGov to submit your ideas or vote on the most promising submissions by this Saturday, October 31st. Your voice will make a major difference in creating a more efficient and sustainable federal government.

As a LEED AP, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to use the most sustainable approach possible with new construction. So much waste is caused by construction sites and people have no idea. I am glad that this administration is so committed to a greener future for our children and planet.

"Paperwork reduction" is only nominal. Let's make a serious, honest effort to actually get rid of the thousands of tons of unecessary paper produced by all agencies. Use less, produce less.

Retired CIA Director Woolsley stated that getting off dependence for ME oil would be a great national security goal. Every time we put gas in the tank, it ends up in Arabian banks, then filters down to radical Islamists through a network of charities. Robert at DECLASSIFIED SECRETS

I agree with gold. I am a LEED AP in training, and the importance of sustainable new construction is not to be overlooked. We live in a wasteful world. Let's do something about it.

As Obama & US take the lead to lower the carbon emissions, so will the developing countries follow suit. Switched on computers infact, cost the Earth.

I think we can all help to reduce our carbon foot print, if everybody worked together with the same aim, if everybody made a small effort, it would make a big difference to protect our planet for the future.

I think it's a great initiative and I only wish we were getting agencies to reduce emissions sooner. 2020 seems like a long ways off.

I'm really glad to hear this although 2020 sounds like a really long time to go! At least its a start! Some private companies I know of have already started doing the things listed in the Efficiency Report but to save on expenses. Its good to know that it also contributes to saving the world.

Whilst I care deeply about my daughters future, the sad truth is that there has been so much damage done already, i truly believe that the planet is already stuffed.
