Secretary Napolitano was at the White House yesterday with the President and members of Congress working on identifying a way forward on comprehensive immigration reform. From the White House blog:
While Congressional leaders are working to tackle the complexities of immigration reform, the Administration has already taken steps to improve the system. The FBI has cleared much of the backlog of immigration background checks, the Department of Homeland Security is speeding up citizenship petitions and in conjunction with the Department of Labor, they are working to crack down on employers who are exploiting illegal workers. The President also announced a new collaborative effort that will utilize technology to improve legal immigration:At the President’s direction, Secretary Napolitano will convene a group of leaders from the White House and Congress to begin identifying the way forward on comprehensive immigration reform.
"Today I'm pleased to announce a new collaboration between my Chief Information Officer, my Chief Performance Officer, my Chief Technologies Officer and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office to make the agency much more efficient, much more transparent, much more user-friendly than it has been in the past.
In the next 90 days, USCIS will launch a vastly improved Web site that will, for the first time ever, allow applicants to get updates on their status of their applications via e-mail and text message and online. And anybody who's dealt with families who are trying to deal with -- navigate the immigration system, this is going to save them huge amounts of time standing in line, waiting around, making phone calls, being put on hold. It's an example of some things that we can do administratively even as we're working through difficult issues surrounding comprehensive immigration.
And the idea is very simple here: We're going to leverage cutting-edge technology to reduce the unnecessary paperwork, backlogs, and the lack of transparency that's caused so many people so much heartache." --More on the White House Blog.

Would that the government here in the UK was getting as deeply involved in the complex solutions required for a complex problem.
I think the move to improve the legal immigration process - utilising effective technology in the process - is a great lead, and I hope we follow it here in the UK.

i don't think that just because a person who was ordered by judge removal because he/she lost the political asylum case it shouldn't be included in comprehensive reform to legalize that person. I think that that person should be legalize because not all judges will have right decision (most of times its about luck, it depends who your judge is
if approving rates of that judge are negative for most of 90% then the answer is that you will not win the case). Most of people who seeking asylum in USA are good people, thous that didn't win the case should be included in comprehensive immigration reform. Many of them go to school and colleges and they will contribute to american society.

I want so much to be an Obama fan. He is so charismatic and capable. Yet, he has broken my heart several times in his short time in office. The most crushing blow was his failure to act on the lowering of the dollar amount needed to obtain an eb5 green card. Numerous times he spoke of his intent to lower this from $500,000 to $350,000 or another such more attainable figure. Sadly, the visa has been extended without being lowered. So very sad..

I work for the DHS Immigration Service and a can say from a first hand account that the advice that you would get from politicians on a panel for immigration reform is just that ..political and nothing more. Advice that is clouded in political judgement and an lack of first hand expierience. First and foremost the paperwork envolved in processing potential immigrants is beyond belief in its complexity of waivers and exceptions, easily put it must be streamlined and simplified with fewer exceptions, waivers or appeals. Secondly releasing illegal immigrants to the streets after commiting a crime of being present illegally in the United States and disrespecting the law of our Homeland is disgracefull. If youve committed a act of illegal entry and have been living in this country knowing that what you are doing is a crime, WHY?! should you be released and trusted to now obey our laws? Severe Criminals should not be our only priority ALL illegal acts of immigration should be dealt with a heavy hand of the law to deter such actions. A illegal immigrant with 20 plus illegal entries should never be offered another voulentary return . street release with a paper saying that they will return for a court date or depart the country, or a reinstate of deportaion order. Prison time should be the sentence for illegally invading a soverign nation with a standing force of commissioned officers of law "enforcement" and standing laws. Prison time to deter a search of a better life when at least they should stay in their home country and demand change, just as we as Americans do on a daily basis, instead of coming to our country and demanid change to benefit themselves of a foreign nation. This country should no longer accept being the worlds dumping ground for the weak , poor, uneducated, lame, sick, criminal minded but for the strong, intelligent, skilled, and honorable that would strengthen us. Very simply put enforce all the laws to the letter without waiver and force the other nations to deal with the issues of their people instead of allowing the United States to be their pressure relief due to their lack of leadership and compassion for the poor and needy.
