The Blog @ Homeland Security

The Blog @ Homeland Security provides an inside-out view of what we do every day at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Blog lets us talk about how we secure our nation, strengthen our programs, and unite the Department behind our common mission and principles. It also lets us hear from you.

"I am a veteran. I am homeland security."

In November 2009, DHS launched a redesigned www.dhs.gov/veterans page to make it easier for veterans to get information about opportunities with the Department. Veterans make up one quarter of the DHS workforce, so we’re committed to making sure they have all the information they need to interact with and conduct business with the department. The website now provides veterans and veteran service organizations a one-stop shop for information about employment, contracting, and volunteer opportunities in the Department.

We updated this page again today to highlight additional exceptional veterans that currently work with the Department, so stop by our veterans profile page and see why our employee veterans find DHS a good fit.

Last year, Secretary Napolitano committed to employing 50,000 veterans by 2012 – during fiscal year 2009, we hired 5,142 veterans. Today, we boast more than 46,000 total veterans among our ranks.

Recruitment and hiring goals are one way we are engaging the veteran community. We are also creating greater opportunities for Veteran-Owned Small Businesses and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses to work with DHS. In 2009, veteran-owned small businesses competed for an won more than $931 million in contracts from DHS.

The nation benefits from the service of our veterans in the work that we do at the Department; they bring proven experience and dedication to the job and we welcome veterans to join DHS and continue their service to the nation.

Visit www.dhs.gov/veterans for more information.

I support this initiative to help veterans find employment. I think people often assume that is somehow easier for vets to find work based on their life experiences and this is not always the case.

    Concerning the exsplosion in Middletown,
I would like to thank all State Agency, firefighters,Ambulances,Hazemat teams for their quick response.
We have to remember that This incident is still under investigation.
    To Jim mills.
Agencies Homeland,FBI etc were Johnny on the spot.
The public just don't hear those things until afterwards.
Phone calls were being made as the Emergencies are going on.
The problem that needs to be check in to:
The TV and Radio alert system was not activate.
This would be for the Middletown area/Shoreline of a report of an explosion at the plant.
We use this Alert system for possible tornado watches.
The system you see is tested on your TV Set or you hear it on your radio.
"This is a test of your Emergency Broadcast System This is only a Test"
Several people I spoke to in the blast Zone had no Alert on their radios or TV.
This would of stopped the 911's from jamming up to over 1,000 plus calls around the Shoreline.
The 911 roll-overs were jammed as well.
For a true emergency to come in would of been difficult.
Being a pass dispatcher for 26 year I praise my dispatch center.
Please look in to the why the broadcast system was not activated.
    Thank You.

We spend a great deal of money to protect our security in airports and around the country yet there are people like Peter Anderson, self proclaimed leader of the Conch Republic in Key West Florida who blatantly sells fake passports, that look exceptionally real, to anyone with the money. 9/11 hijackers had Conch Republic passports as do thousands of people across the Mid East, they are so real looking that they have been used to enter and exit countries around the world. It seems to me that it would not cost a great deal of money to stop this individual from printing them and selling them.

I think this initiative to support veterans’ employment is a great start; but more efforts certainly need to be made. I realize this is not solely DHS's responsibility, but a strategic or supportive partnership between DHS and other departments may prove advantageous and more successful. Combining forces and funding will certainly make for a stronger program. We owe our veterans a deep debt of gratitude and this is a good way to begin repayment.
