Readout of Secretary Johnson’s Trip to Mississippi

GULFPORT, Miss. — Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson traveled to Pascagoula, Gulfport and Biloxi, Miss., where he met with House Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie Thompson and Congressman Steven Palazzo, state and local law enforcement officials, and state emergency management officials.

Secretary Johnson was joined by Congressman Palazzo in Pascagoula where they inspected construction of two National Security Cutters at the Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding facility.

In Gulfport, Secretary Johnson and Congressman Palazzo met with local law enforcement officials, and discussed a range of issues including disaster recovery and response. Later, Secretary Johnson and Congressman Palazzo toured the Robert J. Curry Public Safety Center, as well as current CBP operations and the Gulfport Seaport expansion project at the Port of Gulfport.

Secretary Johnson then visited the Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence at Jackson State University where he joined Ranking Member Thompson to participate in a roundtable with state and local leaders, including state emergency management officials to discuss homeland security issues including strengthening resiliency, the importance of partnering with state and local communities and comprehensive immigration reform. During the meeting, Secretary Johnson reiterated his commitment to working closely with the state of Mississippi and Congress to address these important homeland security issues.
