STERLING, Va.— Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson traveled to Sterling, Va. to meet with the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) to discuss the Department’s ongoing efforts to safeguard local communities by expanding partnerships with community organizations and state and local officials on civil rights and civil liberties.

Secretary Johnson participated in a roundtable discussion with 50 leaders from non-governmental organizations focused on the protection of civil rights and civil liberties, including representatives from ADAMS. During the discussion, Secretary Johnson addressed the participants’ concerns regarding efforts to keep local communities safe. Secretary Johnson highlighted the Department’s commitment to working with and empowering local communities and underscored the importance of community engagement to effectively protect communities from violent extremist threats, reiterating that homeland security begins with hometown security.
