Clark W. Stevens

As Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Clark Stevens serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary on the department’s public outreach, strategic and incident communications, and media relations efforts.  He brings extensive public affairs experience to DHS, having served in senior communications positions across the Executive Branch as well as in political campaigns.

Prior to taking the role as Assistant Secretary in June, 2013, Mr. Stevens was an Assistant Press Secretary within the White House, where he served as a spokesperson for President Obama and oversaw communications related to energy and environmental policy, as well as homeland security issues and disaster response.

Mr. Stevens joined the Administration in 2009 as the Press Secretary for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, where he acted as national spokesperson and oversaw FEMA’s press operations nationally and across its ten regions. In 2010, he transitioned to Press Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, where he served as the Secretary’s principal spokesperson and managed press operations for the Department on a variety of issues, including the federal response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Mr. Stevens moved from DHS to the White House in November, 2010.

Mr. Stevens’ experience also includes service on the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee as well as the 2008 Obama for America campaign, where he worked in a number of states during the primary campaign, and in Virginia during the general election.

He is a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
