Scorecard on Sustainability and Energy Performance

The fiscal year 2010 scorecard on sustainability and energy performance is a benchmark the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will use to identify and track the best opportunities to reduce pollution, improve efficiency and cut costs. Under Executive Order 13514, President Obama directed federal agencies to lead by example in clean energy and to meet a range of energy, water, pollution and waste reduction targets. Based on scorecard benchmarks, DHS will update its Sustainability Plan by June and post it on this website.

DHS met the following goals on the OMB scorecard:

  • Submitted – on time - comprehensive inventory as 2008 baseline for Scope 1&2 GHG Reduction Target of 25.3% by 2020
  • Submitted – on time - comprehensive inventory as 2008 baseline for Scope 3 GHG Reduction Target of 4% by 2020
  • Achieved at least 15% reduction in energy intensity in goal-subject facilities compared with 2003 and we are on track for 30% by 2015
  • Achieved 5% use of renewable energy from renewable electricity sources, including 2.5% from new sources (thermal, mechanical, or electric)as a percent of facility electricity use
  • Achieved reduction in potable water intensity compared with 2007 of at least 6% and we are on track for 26% in 2020

DHS will continue to address areas that need improvement, including petroleum reduction by replacing some vehicles with alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles at their life cycle end. DHS is also incorporating sustainable building characteristics into new real estate investments.
