Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
Overview
The Office of Intelligence and Analysis Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) is a paid internship program providing federal employment opportunities. These opportunities can range from single-summer positions, to those that recur each year for as long as the individual remains a student. The STEP provides maximum flexibility for both students and managers, as the nature of the work need not be related to the student's academic or career goals.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants must be:
- A student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student
- At least the minimum age required by federal, state or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors
- Taking at least a half-time academic or vocational and technical courseload in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2- or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, and a U.S. citizen or a national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island). However, non-citizens may be eligible for employment if:
- permitted by a federal agency's appropriation act, and
- eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws. U.S. citizenship is required for conversion to permanent employment under this program.
How to Apply
The Department will post a vacancy announcement on www.usajobs.gov each year during the months of January and/or February. Students must apply during this period. The announcement allows students to choose a career path which interests them, and if selected, they will be placed in a position in their chosen field.
