Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Main Page >> Organization >> Training and Education >> Constitution Day
The Constitution defines the structure and function of the federal government and also promises all Americans that certain basic rights and liberties are protected. Those rights and liberties were won and preserved at great cost by previous generations of brave patriots. As federal employees, we are duty bound to honor those sacrifices and to work tirelessly to keep the promises contained in our Nation’s founding document.
As Secretary Chertoff stressed at his swearing-in ceremony, Homeland Security’s strategic mission “is no less than this: protect America, while fostering the values of liberty, privacy and opportunity we all hold dear.”
To raise awareness of Constitution Day, September 17, Congress directed the provision of Constitution Day training materials to all federal employees. This training will help remind us of our oath swearing to support and defend the Constitution, and assist us in our daily efforts to act in accordance with the proud American traditions we uphold.
