Success Stories: DHS Supports Operation United STOP in Tennessee

Objective: Continue to Protect our Nation from Dangerous Goods

Situation   Action
  • March 2007: Tennessee looks to crack down on transporting hazardous materials (HAZMAT) and other illegal activities by trucks across the state
  • After a similar effort in October 2006, Tennessee looks to duplicate success by teaming with DHS
  • DHS works with Tennessee’s Highway Patrol, Emergency Management Agency, Bureau of Investigation and National Guard for two months
 
  • May 3, 2007: Operation United STOP (Strategic Transportation Observation & Prevention) launches
  • Federal, state and local agencies work in concert
  • DHS and TN officials conduct random truck inspections at seven sites across the state
  • Trucks are strategically inspected for safety defects, bombs, drugs and radiological materials
Result    
  • Of the 1,500 trucks checked across seven sites:
  • 395 HAZMAT trucks are checked
  • 596 safety defects are found throughout
  • 329 trucks are checked by bomb or drug dogs
  • 760 trucks are tested for radiological contaminants
  • 66 trucks are taken off the road immediately
