Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding:
Janet Woodka
On March 31, 2009 Janet Woodka was appointed by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, in consultation with President Obama, to serve as the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding.
Immediately prior to her appointment, Janet was the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Office of the Federal Coordinator. As such, she was the principal liaison to Congress and to federal, state, and local elected officials on all phases of Congressional actions regarding post-hurricane recovery and rebuilding efforts. In addition, she coordinated legislative actions of the administration and various federal agencies on these issues.
From April 2006 until August 2007, Janet served as the Legislative Director for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu. As the Legislative Director, Janet handled development and coordination of the Senator’s legislative agenda, which included many issues related to recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, including waiver of the local match for FEMA public assistance and funding for hurricane protection. She was also the Senator’s lead staff member on the Domenici-Landrieu Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006, which provided Louisiana a share of the Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas revenues.
Formerly, Janet was a lawyer with the law firm of Van Ness Feldman in Washington, D.C. where she focused on energy, environment, and natural resource issues. She was involved in the early stages of recovery from Hurricane Katrina, representing energy infrastructure and energy facilities which were damaged and offline.
Early in her career, Janet practiced law in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Janet received her law degree from Tulane University and her B.A. from Boston College.
