About the Science & Technology Directorate Infrastructure Protection and Disaster Management Division

The DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Infrastructure Protection and Disaster Management Division (IDD) develops technical solutions, modeling and simulation tools and reach back capabilities to improve federal, state, local, tribal, and private sector preparedness for and response to all-hazards events impacting the U.S. population, critical infrastructure, and economy. IDD also concentrates on developing improved preparedness and response capabilities to protect the nation’s emergency responders in the field.

Mission

IDD’s mission is to improve and increase the nation’s preparedness for and response to natural and man-made threats through superior situational awareness, emergency response capabilities, and critical infrastructure protection.

Leadership and Organization

Mr. Trent DePersia serves as the Acting Director of IDD. The Division consists of three major thrust areas:

  • Infrastructure Protection. Priorities in Structural Resilience, and Protection and Mitigation Technologies
  • Disaster Management. Priorities in Response and Law
  • Enforcement, Disaster Management, and Visual Analytics Technologies Cross-Cutting. Priorities in Regional Resilience Technologies

Infrastructure Protection Thrust Area

This thrust area identifies, understands, and mitigates all-hazards vulnerabilities of the 18 critical infrastructure sectors identified in the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP). This thrust area addresses the requirements of the Office of Infrastructure Protection and supports Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7 (HSPD-7), Critical Infrastructure Identification, Prioritization, and Protection.

Disaster Management Thrust Area

This thrust area improves the preparedness and disaster management response capabilities for federal, state, local, tribal governments, first responders, and the private sector to all-hazard events impacting the U.S. population, critical infrastructure, and the economy; understanding natural hazards and developing mitigation measures to protect against them.

Cross-Cutting Thrust Area

This thrust area prioritizes in Regional Resilience Technologies. Cross-Cutting includes the Kentucky Critical Infrastructure Protection (KCI) and Southeast Region Research Initiative (SERRI).
