Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs: Sean Smith

Sean Smith is Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs of the Department of Homeland Security. In this capacity he is the principal staff advisor and assistant to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security for public affairs, internal communications, and all aspects of media relations and communications issues. The office also coordinates the public affairs units of all Departmental component organizations.

His background includes more than 15 years of private sector experience in the area of public affairs. He has worked in a variety of senior communications positions on campaigns and in the private sector. Most recently, he served as Pennsylvania Communications Director of the Obama-Biden campaign in 2008.

Smith holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor’s degree from University of Oregon.
