Objective 1: Fully Engage the State and Local Law Enforcement Community

Initiative: State and Local Fusion Centers

A fusion senter is a collaborative effort between two or more agencies that provide resources, expertise, and/or information to the center with the goal of maximizing the ability to detect, prevent, apprehend and respond to criminal and terrorist activity.

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement has collaborated with the Department's Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) to embed I&A analysts in state and local fusion centers throughout the country to ensure that law enforcement officials obtain timely and actionable national security information from the intelligence community. To date, I&A has deployed 34 intelligence operations specialists to fusion centers nationwide.

Initiative: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement  is collaborating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department's Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and the National Institute of Justice to offer grant funding to law enforcement agencies for the purchase of PPE that meets the needs of the nation’s first responders.

Initiative: Secure Cellular Telephones

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement  is collaborating with Office of Intelligence and Analysis and major city chiefs of police to distribute 100 secure telephones that will allow law enforcement officials to communicate at the SECRET level during critical incidents.

Objective 2: Fully Engage the Public

Initiative: Community Programs

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement is working to provide local Citizen Corps Councils and community-based law enforcement programs with best practices for outreach and education to support community prevention, planning, preparedness, response and recovery for terrorism, pandemics and natural disasters.

Objective 3: Transform our Communities into Unfriendly Environments for Terrorists

Initiative: Preparedness Initiatives

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement is supporting state and local law enforcement agencies in the development of anti-terrorism drills and exercises that test their preparedness and response effectiveness and their coordination with the law enforcement community.

Objective 4: Protect our People, Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources

Initiative: Law Enforcement Deployment Teams

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement supports initiatives to develop a national mutual aid system to allow multijurisdictional law enforcement assistance to arrive quickly and deploy effectively to critical incidents.

Initiative: Enhancing Critical Infrastructure Coordination

The Office for State and Local Law Enforcement is collaborating with the Office of Infrastructure Protection to increase state and local law enforcement participation in the critical infrastructure classification process.
