I am very pleased that President Bush today nominated Paul A. Schneider as Deputy Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security. Paul has demonstrated his tremendous leadership and dedication to the department while serving most recently as the acting Deputy Secretary and previously as the Under Secretary for Management.

As my acting deputy for the past four months, Paul has focused his vast management experience not only on day-to-day operations of the department, but also on ensuring a strong and smooth transition to the next administration and executing my top management priorities.

Paul’s federal service began over 40 years ago at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a project engineer. His years of experience include such challenging positions as the Deputy Director of NAVSEA’S Auxiliary Systems Sub-Group, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, and the Senior Acquisition Executive of the National Security Agency. Prior to joining the department, Paul was a defense and aerospace consultant.

I am grateful for his continued service and look forward to his quick Senate confirmation.
