Department of Homeland Security Announces Privacy Officer

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge is pleased to announce the appointment of Nuala O'Connor Kelly of Virginia to be the Privacy Officer at the Department of Homeland Security.  O'Connor Kelly is currently serving at the Department of Commerce where she has been the Privacy Officer, Chief Counsel for Technology and the Deputy Director for Policy and Planning.  Previously, she worked at Double Click, Inc. as the Vice President for Data Protection and Chief Privacy Officer where she helped form the company's data protection and privacy compliance department.  She was also an Associate for Sidley and Austin and a Partner at Hudson Cook, L.L.P.  O'Connor Kelly received a B.A. from Princeton University, an M.A. from Harvard University, and her J.D. from Georgetown University.  

The Privacy Officer for the Department of Homeland Security is responsible for ensuring that the department's policies protect privacy rights of American citizens afforded by our Constitution and laws.  The Privacy Officer is also tasked with ensuring that the use of technologies within the Department sustain, and do not erode, privacy protections.
