As part of an ongoing emphasis on Gulf Coast storm rehabilitation, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano will travel to Texas on Thursday, March 26 to meet with Governor Rick Perry and hold conversations with business representatives and state and local officials on disaster recovery and renewal. She will also tour Port Arthur to view the Hurricane Ike recovery progress, hold a media availability with Governor Perry, and host a press conference in Galveston.
Disaster recovery along the Gulf Coast is a high priority for Secretary Napolitano, who earlier this month visited Louisiana and Mississippi to survey firsthand the hurricane renewal process following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The visit will be the Secretary’s first to Texas since she joined President Obama’s Cabinet in January. Both Galveston and Port Arthur sustained significant damage during Hurricanes Rita, in 2005, and Ike in 2008, which made landfall in Galveston as a Category 2 hurricane. The area was also hit hard by offshore oil and gas spills, prompting major responses from the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal and state agencies.
