MEXICO CITY — Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson traveled to Mexico for the third time since taking office a year ago, to meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto and members of his Cabinet. Secretary Johnson was accompanied by Senior Advisor to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor Rand Beers, Department of Homeland Security Acting Assistant Secretary for Policy Alan Bersin, and other officials of the Department of Homeland Security. Also present for the discussions was U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Anthony Wayne.
Secretary Johnson traveled to Mexico City to report on the executive actions directed by President Obama on November 20 to fix the broken immigration system in the United States. There is much interest in these executive actions in the Mexican government. Secretary Johnson also visited President Peña Nieto in preparation for his visit to Washington in January. While in Mexico City, Secretary Johnson also met with Secretary of Interior Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong and Secretary of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Kuribreña. Secretary Johnson states “our relationship with the government of Mexico is as strong as it has ever been, on issues ranging from promoting lawful trade and travel to our shared border security interests. I count on senior officials of the Mexican government as trusted partners and personal friends.”
