Today, Director Clancy and I announce the appointment of Craig D. Magaw to be Deputy Director of the U.S. Secret Service. Craig Magaw is a veteran of the U.S. Secret Service and previously served as the Assistant Director of the Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information.

“Throughout his career, Craig has had a stellar reputation, well respected within the Secret Service and with our many external partners,” said Director Clancy. “As an experienced leader and public servant, Craig is committed to supporting the men and women of the Secret Service and fulfilling our integrated mission.”

At the same time, Director Clancy and I announce the creation of a new U.S. Secret Service Chief Operating Officer (COO) position. This position, which was a recommendation of the Independent Panel, will be filled in the near future, and we intend to embark on a wide search for the right person for the job. The COO will be equal in rank to the Deputy Director, and will serve as the principal administrator and be responsible for planning and directing all business and program activities. The position will focus on improving performance, directing coordination and liaison activities, and aligning budgetary and strategic planning efforts.

As recent events have clearly shown, there is more to be done to promote operational excellence and public trust in the Secret Service. However, change does not happen overnight.

Director Clancy is doing a number of things to implement the recommendations of the Independent Panel. Joe has already made a number of difficult personnel changes in senior leadership of the agency. I know also that Joe finds the events on March 4 to be unacceptable, demands the most of his people, and will make the appropriate accountability determinations.

For my part, I will continue to provide engaged and sustained oversight of the United States Secret Service, to ensure that it has what it needs to get the job done.

Craig D. Magaw

Craig D. Magaw began his career with the Secret Service as an officer in the Uniformed Division and later served as a special agent in the Washington and Philadelphia Field Offices.  Throughout his career, he has served in a variety of supervisory positions in both protective and investigative roles including as a member of the Presidential Protective Division, the Special Agent in Charge of the Orlando Field Office and the Deputy Assistant Director of the Office of Investigations.
