Secretary Johnson Swears in New Members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council

Release Date: February 25, 2016

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson today met with the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) where he discussed a range of homeland security-related issues and swore in the two newest members to HSAC, Michael A. Nutter and Christian P. Marrone.

Secretary Johnson made the following remarks during today’s session:

“With one year left in this Administration, I intend to get a lot done and I have given our senior staff very specific goals and timelines for accomplishments. My principal priority is to leave the Department of Homeland Security in a better place than we found it so that it functions better, more effectively and more efficiently in delivering our homeland security services for the American people.

“I have discovered in my two years as Secretary of Homeland Security that no news is good news. When there is no news, it’s because somebody in homeland security, in law enforcement, in the intelligence community every day is doing something to keep the American people safe that we don’t always know about.

“Last week, I visited with several of our Secret Service agents who had been in a very serious car accident in New Hampshire. One of those agents, who has been in the Secret Service only about a year, and whose entire body was numb, could not wait to get back to work and expressed so much enthusiasm. It reminded me of the level of enthusiasm General Allen and I saw in military hospitals when he hosted me in Afghanistan Thanksgiving Day 2012.

“And yesterday, when I was in Miami, Florida I visited with one of our HSI agents who had been badly injured in an incident. Again, the level of optimism and determination was reaffirming. This is true among all employees at the Department, who work every day to ensure homeland security.

“I welcome the new members to the advisory committee and hope they get to see the great work of our employees, and I thank all the HSAC members for their continued service to the country and to the Department.”

The HSAC is a federal advisory committee to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that provides the Secretary of Homeland Security with independent, informed recommendations and advice on a variety of homeland security issues. The HSAC is comprised of national policy makers, representatives from state, local and tribal government, emergency and first responder communities, academia and the private sector.

Michael Nutter and Christian Marrone were sworn in today to serve on the HSAC:

Michael A. Nutter served two terms as Mayor of Philadelphia. He was first elected in November 2007, and then re-elected to a second term in November 2011. Most recently, while Mayor of Philadelphia he worked closely with the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Johnson on the operational security and contingency planning for the September 2015 Papal visit which was designated as a National Special Security Event. Before being elected mayor, he served for almost 15 years on the Philadelphia City Council representing the 4th District. Mr. Nutter holds a B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Christian P. Marrone recently joined CSRA Inc. as Vice President of Government Relations. Mr. Marrone is charged with executing the company’s strategy for strengthening relationships across the U.S. government and spearheading the company’s efforts to provide thought leading solutions to address the critical policy issues challenging government. Prior to joining CSRA, Mr. Marrone served as the Chief of Staff of DHS for Secretary Johnson for the past two years. Before joining DHS, Mr. Marrone held a number of senior positions at the Department of Defense (DOD), including Special Assistant to then-Secretary Robert Gates, and Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs. After leaving DOD, Mr. Marrone served as an executive for 3M, where he helped develop the company’s Defense Markets Division and Vice President for National Security and Acquisition Policy at the Aerospace Industries Association. Mr. Marrone has a B.A. in Political Science from Pennsylvania State University where he also played under Coach Joe Paterno, a J.D. from Temple University, and a Master’s degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.
