WASHINGTON—Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson met with Belgian Minister of Interior Jan Jambon to express his condolences to the Minister and the Belgian people following last week’s terrorist attacks and offer the Department’s support for ongoing investigations and continued collaboration on counterterrorism.
Secretary Johnson and Minister Jambon discussed the importance of effective information sharing in the aftermath of the attacks and focused on opportunities for the United States and Belgium to enhance counterterrorism collaboration, including the screening of travelers and asylum seekers. Secretary Johnson noted the strong history of homeland security and intelligence cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to routinely share information with our Belgian partners to ensure our collective security.
Secretary Johnson and Minister Jambon also discussed European efforts to strengthen immigration and security controls on the Schengen Zone’s external borders and to collect and analyze Passenger Name Records for flights to and within the European Union. Secretary Johnson reiterated the commitment he made last week to Belgian Ambassador to the United States Johan Verbeke to provide any additional assistance required to respond to the terrorist attacks in Brussels and bring those responsible to justice.
