On May 15-17, Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas will travel to Havana, Cuba to participate in bilateral meetings on law enforcement cooperation with senior Cuban Government officials and kick off the Law Enforcement Dialogue between the United States and Cuba.
The Law Enforcement Dialogue will advance the principles outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Cuban Ministry of the Interior and Customs Office signed in May 2016 as a result of negotiations led by Deputy Secretary Mayorkas. Engagement activities with the Cuban Government outlined in the MOU will be the focus of the Law Enforcement Dialogue next week in Havana. DHS Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer Alan Bersin will also participate in the discussions.
Deputy Secretary Mayorkas, the highest ranking Cuban-American in the Administration, was born in Havana, Cuba. His family immigrated to the United States in 1960 and resided in Miami, Florida before moving to California. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas was naturalized as a United States citizen in 1973.
