Maya Angelou once said, “I think we all have empathy. We may not have enough courage to display it.” Often the journey others are on is the same journey as our own. When we take the time to lift up our heads and our hearts and make those daily connections, no matter how small, there’s always an opportunity to discover that we are not alone, that we have a shared story, that we at times have the same demons and, most importantly, the same dreams.
Sometimes the courage we need is to look in the mirror and find empathy in our own eyes, in our own smile, and in our own heart. Once we do that, extending our hand to others becomes easier and our confidence grows stronger. Courage doesn’t have to roar…it’s ok to silently hold someone’s hand.
