Over 500 people attended the virtual Federal Privacy Summit to hear experts, including Privacy Office staff, on topics including AI, Digital identity, and Privacy and the Pandemic.
Federal agencies are required to provide what is commonly referred to as a “Privacy Act Statement” to all persons asked to provide personal information about themselves, which will go into a system of records (i.e., the information will be stored and retrieved using the individual’s name or other personal identifier such as a Social Security number).
For National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and always, the Privacy Office works with CISA to embed privacy safeguards into interagency cybersecurity policy initiatives and technologies used for cyber detection and prevention.
Today the Privacy Office hosted the third Annual DHS Privacy Incident Tabletop Exercise to test, validate, and refine the DHS breach response plan.
he Privacy Office’s 2019 Computer Matching Agreement Activity Report summarizes how these inter-agency contracts save taxpayers money and protect personal privacy by establishing safeguards for disclosing data on federal benefit programs.
Section 803 of the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2002 requires the DHS Privacy Office to report quarterly on the following activities: number and types of privacy reviews of Department actions undertaken; type of advice provided and the response given to such advice; and number and nature of privacy complaints received by DHS for alleged violations, along with a summary of the disposition of such complaints.
This delegation vests the authorities of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in the Chief Privacy Officer and Chief Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer responsibilities.
The DHS Privacy Office tracks implementation of PCR recommendations based on supporting evidence provided by the Component Privacy Office and/or Program reviewed. PCR recommendations that have yet to be implemented according to DHS Instruction 047-01-004 are listed here, and the list is updated periodically.
The DHS Privacy Office conducted a Privacy Compliance Review (PCR) of FEMA that focused on information sharing practices and oversight in response to two major privacy incidents that occurred during Fiscal Year 2019. This PCR details six recommendations to improve FEMA’s implementation of information sharing and safeguarding activities that adequately protect individuals’ privacy.
