WEBVTT 1 00:00:05.117 --> 00:00:08.119 SECRETARY JOHNSON: I'm here with some of our senior leaders of the 2 00:00:08.139 --> 00:00:10.508 Department of Homeland Security. 3 00:00:10.518 --> 00:00:14.058 The main purpose for my visit here today which I want to talk to you about 4 00:00:14.099 --> 00:00:19.058 is what you see reflected in the statement which we have handed out concerning 5 00:00:19.118 --> 00:00:20.998 border security. 6 00:00:21.079 --> 00:00:26.802 This is an effort on our part within the Department, frankly, to be more transparent 7 00:00:26.862 --> 00:00:32.662 about our border security numbers, our numbers of apprehensions. I want to, as 8 00:00:32.702 --> 00:00:37.302 we directed as part of our executive actions to be more transparent when it 9 00:00:37.343 --> 00:00:45.222 comes to the numbers. So at the six month mark, midway through Fiscal Year 2015, 10 00:00:45.222 --> 00:00:50.043 we wanted to provide you with a report on apprehensions on the southern border. 11 00:00:50.102 --> 00:01:01.662 Thus far, in FY15, up to and through March 2015, there have been 151,805 apprehensions 12 00:01:01.662 --> 00:01:07.382 on the southern border. What is significant about that in our view is that 13 00:01:07.382 --> 00:01:14.182 that number is down considerably from where it was this time last year in 2014. 14 00:01:14.182 --> 00:01:21.542 It is 28% less than the number last year as we were beginning to see the spike in 15 00:01:21.542 --> 00:01:27.662 migration on the southern border. The number this year of apprehensions at 16 00:01:27.662 --> 00:01:35.562 the six month point is also lower than it was in 2013, as well as 2012. The number 17 00:01:35.562 --> 00:01:40.002 is down considerably in all categories. Total apprehensions, unaccompanied 18 00:01:40.002 --> 00:01:47.103 children, family units, as well as single adults. The month of April, if 19 00:01:47.103 --> 00:01:49.742 we project it out to the end of month - we're almost through the month of 20 00:01:49.742 --> 00:01:55.542 April - looks pretty much the same. Apprehensions at a significantly 21 00:01:55.542 --> 00:02:03.082 reduced level. This is all despite the improving economy in the United 22 00:02:03.082 --> 00:02:08.762 States, which typically operates as a pull factor for illegal migration.
