It could cause either crazing, which is like a 00:00:30.450 --> 00:00:35.620 bubbling effect that limits visibility or in extreme cases it can actually melt. 00:00:35.620 --> 00:00:41.040 Burn Saver is a device that was developed to give first responders a warning when they're in a thermal 00:00:41.040 --> 00:00:46.340 environment that could cause degradation to their personal protective equipment, specifically 00:00:46.340 --> 00:00:51.540 the face piece. The self-contained breathing apparatus. The Burn Saver device has five 00:00:51.540 --> 00:00:56.680 thermal sensors. There is a software inside the Burn Saver that compares 00:00:56.680 --> 00:01:01.680 thermal profiles against possible threat levels. So basically 00:01:01.680 --> 00:01:06.940 a firefighter enters a thermal environment, it's comparing 00:01:06.940 --> 00:01:12.310 the outside temperature that the sensors record with the internal database that's 00:01:12.310 --> 00:01:17.460 contained in the software. [Steve Birnbalm] Given how conditions can sometimes change rapidly. 00:01:17.460 --> 00:01:22.670 Sometimes our activities take our focus away and distract us, having something 00:01:22.670 --> 00:01:28.290 that can continuously pay attention to the conditions and 00:01:28.290 --> 00:01:34.090 alert us to any dangerous conditions that are coming up is very important. 00:01:34.090 --> 00:01:39.630 [William] But Burn Saver can detect a condition that cause problems for the integrity of the face piece. 00:01:39.630 --> 00:01:44.950 It can alert in three different ways. One is a blinking or a steady blue light. 00:01:44.950 --> 00:01:50.230 The other is an indication through a radio channel that 00:01:50.230 --> 00:01:55.750 a command post. The third is an indication in the firefighters heads up display contain 00:01:55.750 --> 00:02:00.880 in itself in a self-contained breathing apparatus mask. [Lori Brill] I can see on a monitor what firefighters 00:02:00.880 --> 00:02:06.120 are being exposed to versus just relying on what is 00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:11.430 happening with the outside of the structure. [William] We conducted a field assessment of the Burn Saver at the 00:02:11.430 --> 00:02:16.610 National Firefighter Academy. What we wanted to know was if it was going to interfere with 00:02:16.610 --> 00:02:21.720 the normal activities that the normal activities that the firefighter had to perform. The general impression 00:02:21.720 --> 00:02:27.040 by evaluators was very positive. They made some recommendations 00:02:27.040 --> 00:02:32.470 to make some fine tuning and to make the alarm more visible. 00:02:32.470 --> 00:02:37.780 But overall they liked the concept and they thought it would be something very worth while 00:02:37.780 --> 00:02:42.930 [Lisa Pine] This technology absolutely address something that's important to us. As our PPE improves 00:02:42.930 --> 00:02:48.170 and gets more and more advanced, we're able to spend more time in hotter conditions 00:02:48.170 --> 00:02:53.590 and the weakest part of our ensemble is the face piece. 00:02:53.590 --> 00:02:58.770 So having this technology to help us prevent that failure is very important. 00:02:58.770 --> 00:03:03.940 For more information: first.responder@hq.dhs.gov 00:03:03.940 --> 00:03:09.040 Homeland Security Science and Technology 00:03:09.040 --> 00:03:12.025 [Fire crackling music]
