ubiquitous technology 00:03:56.403 --> 00:04:00.824 has become in the lives of our kids. 00:04:00.824 --> 00:04:04.453 The more frequently they engage with and use the technical 00:04:04.453 --> 00:04:10.709 devices they're playing with and communicating on social media, 00:04:10.709 --> 00:04:14.171 it changes the way they're thinking. 00:04:14.171 --> 00:04:17.424 It changes their understanding of how they might interact 00:04:17.424 --> 00:04:23.180 with one another, how they can get their message out, 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:27.517 how they can be seen or see others. 00:04:27.517 --> 00:04:31.855 Ultimately, we know that in the developmental psychology of our 00:04:31.855 --> 00:04:35.692 youth every individual seeks to have 00:04:35.692 --> 00:04:40.489 their basic needs satisfied. 00:04:40.489 --> 00:04:43.658 The need for safety, security, 00:04:43.658 --> 00:04:48.288 for acceptance, for power, for fun, for freedom. 00:04:48.288 --> 00:04:50.499 I know there are lot of educators in the room today 00:04:50.499 --> 00:04:52.792 and you know I'm parroting William Glasser, 00:04:52.792 --> 00:04:55.837 one of my favorite philosophers, 00:04:55.837 --> 00:05:00.217 educational philosophers of all time. 00:05:00.217 --> 00:05:05.514 Access to the technology changes the way the methods, 00:05:05.514 --> 00:05:08.391 the behaviors that we might engage in 00:05:08.391 --> 00:05:13.355 to secure access to those needs. 00:05:13.355 --> 00:05:19.110 So our way of responding and understanding the inner world, 00:05:19.110 --> 00:05:25.033 the inner workings of our students' understandings 00:05:25.033 --> 00:05:27.452 also changes. 00:05:27.452 --> 00:05:31.331 And it means there's something that we can do about it. 00:05:31.331 --> 00:05:35.919 in many households. 00:05:56.982 --> 00:06:00.110 I started using my first computer in 1981, 00:06:00.110 --> 00:06:02.153 but I perspective 96 00:06:02.153 --> 00:06:06.491 is where Google came into the playing field. 00:06:06.491 --> 00:06:09.828 Why I'm pointing out 1999 though 00:06:09.828 --> 00:06:15.000 is because something kind of major happened. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:20.171 And that was there was the shooting at Columbine, 00:06:20.171 --> 00:06:24.676 which transformed the landscape of securities, 00:06:24.676 --> 00:06:26.219 of threat assessment teams 00:06:26.219 --> 00:06:31.808 and the way schools dealt with threats forever. 00:06:31.808 --> 00:06:37.439 See in 1999 what we didn't know is that the Columbine shooters 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:41.693 had already been using the internet 00:06:41.693 --> 00:06:46.114 to communicate their thinking. 00:06:46.114 --> 00:06:50.910 The shooters had created web pages with hit lists. 00:06:50.910 --> 00:06:54.289 And we weren't aware. 00:06:54.289 --> 00:06:59.252 How would we have investigated a threat activity in 99 versus 00:06:59.252 --> 00:07:05.759 how do we do it now with the ubiquity of technologies 00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:10.096 and the prevalence of use in our youth. 00:07:10.096 --> 00:07:14.017 Well, hopefully it's changed because a lot has. 00:07:14.017 --> 00:07:18.605 And since that time, in Canada there has been a concerted 00:07:18.605 --> 00:07:25.570 effort to ensure that we respond better and learn from the past. 00:07:25.570 --> 00:07:29.824 See eight days after the Columbine shooting 00:07:29.824 --> 00:07:35.914 there was a similar event taking place in Taber, Alberta. 00:07:35.914 --> 00:07:41.503 Now at that time there wasn't a lot being done in this field, 00:07:41.503 --> 00:07:43.963 but suddenly the government stood up and said 00:07:43.963 --> 00:07:47.008 we need to do something. 00:07:47.008 --> 00:07:53.056 And there was a default hypothesis which overtook 00:07:53.056 --> 00:07:55.475 all the work in this field. 00:07:55.475 --> 00:07:59.145 And that hypothesis eight days following the shooting 00:07:59.145 --> 00:08:08.071 in Columbine was this was a copycat. 00:08:08.071 --> 00:08:13.451 And that controlled the landscape of threat assessment 00:08:13.451 --> 00:08:16.079 for a number of years. 00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:19.499 But we learned something. 00:08:19.499 --> 00:08:24.421 Nobody goes to bed today a healthy individual, 00:08:24.421 --> 00:08:26.297 wakes up tomorrow 00:08:26.297 --> 00:08:29.676 sees something on the media like another shooting 00:08:29.676 --> 00:08:33.972 and says I'm going to do that. 00:08:33.972 --> 00:08:38.184 Nobody just snaps. 00:08:38.184 --> 00:08:42.731 And that realization has completely transformed the way 00:08:42.731 --> 00:08:46.151 we know we can respond to move into an 00:08:46.151 --> 00:08:52.157 intervention operational lane as opposed to, 00:08:52.157 --> 00:08:56.494 so being proactive as opposed to being reactive. 00:08:56.494 --> 00:08:59.706 That is this: the cornerstone of every 00:08:59.706 --> 00:09:04.002 behavioral threat assessment model out there. 00:09:04.002 --> 00:09:07.589 There is a pathway to violence 00:09:07.589 --> 00:09:10.675 that individuals find themselves along 00:09:10.675 --> 00:09:17.849 and this pathway takes time, nobody just snaps. 00:09:17.849 --> 00:09:19.184 First there's a grievance. 00:09:19.184 --> 00:09:23.605 And if I'm upset at something, rrr, seething, there we go. 00:09:23.605 --> 00:09:25.857 There's time for intervention. 00:09:25.857 --> 00:09:31.321 I can reset that mindset so that we don't continue 00:09:31.321 --> 00:09:33.573 the journey towards violence. 00:09:33.573 --> 00:09:38.077 If the grievance isn't settled, there isn't that shift 00:09:38.077 --> 00:09:40.747 and it continues to manifest itself, 00:09:40.747 --> 00:09:42.165 we might move into ideation. 00:09:42.165 --> 00:09:45.668 In other words, I'm going to get revenge. 00:09:45.668 --> 00:09:49.506 Revenge if not settled moves in towards the planning spectrum 00:09:49.506 --> 00:09:53.718 and then the preparation and ultimately if not intervened, 00:09:53.718 --> 00:09:58.097 if not thwarted at some point along this period of time, 00:09:58.097 --> 00:10:03.812 because it does take time, we might see that violent act. 00:10:05.980 --> 00:10:12.362 So the question becomes how can we inform the practices 00:10:12.362 --> 00:10:18.576 so that we allow our support teams 00:10:18.576 -->
