WASHINGTON—As part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) ongoing partnership with law enforcement to advance the homeland security mission, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas today hosted a roundtable meeting with federal, state, local, tribal and campus law enforcement officials to discuss the important role the law enforcement community plays in keeping our nation safe and secure.

Secretary Johnson expressed support for strengthening DHS’s law enforcement partnerships through enhanced communication, information sharing, and collaboration between the Department and all levels of law enforcement.  He also noted that in today’s constantly evolving threat environment, law enforcement has the dual mission to combat cyber crime as well as traditional criminal activity facilitated through the Internet.

Last month, Secretary Johnson visited the Joint Regional Intelligence Center in the Los Angeles area, just one example of a major urban area fusion center that promotes the sharing of useful information from federal law enforcement to local communities, and vice versa.

Deputy Secretary Mayorkas underscored the Department’s commitment to improving communication – not just during crises, but every day; improving our information sharing and enhancing our collaboration across the board.

Roundtable participants represented law enforcement from all levels of government as well as at stakeholder groups, professional organizations and significant metropolitan areas, including:

Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies
Boston Police Department (MA)
Chicago Police Department (IL)
Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association
Fraternal Order of Police
Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (MN)
Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association
Houston Police Department (TX)
International Association of Campus Law Enforcement
International Association of Chiefs of Police
International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training

National Fusion Center Association
National Native American Law Enforcement Association
National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives

DHS works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement to protect communities across our nation, and work to dismantle terrorist and transnational criminal organizations that seek to exploit our air, land and maritime borders. Fusion centers provide a range of training in areas such as violent extremism and active shooter threats, as well as supporting the Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative and the Department’s “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign.
