WASHINGTON – Sixteen years ago today, Americans were reminded that threats to our values and our way of life still exist in this world. Nearly 3,000 lives were taken from us during those horrific terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. Today, we remember the victims and honor the first responders who so bravely gave their lives in the service of others.

The Department of Homeland Security was formed in response to those attacks. In our darkest hour, we came together and made it clear we would never allow terrorists to defeat us. We at the Department don’t often take the time to think about how the work we do every day safeguards our American way of life. Today is a solemn reminder of our responsibility, and a chance to recommit ourselves to the mission.

I am deeply proud of the dedicated men and women at the Department of Homeland Security and I thank them for their tireless service to our nation.
