As Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Dirk J. Vande Beek oversees the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s public outreach and media relations efforts. He also directs the Department’s strategic, incident, and internal communications, and serves as the principal communications advisor to the Secretary.
Dirk Vande Beek is an accomplished leader with extensive communications and government affairs expertise.
Previously Mr. Vande Beek served as the Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Energy, where he oversaw the Department’s communications activities, provided counsel to Secretary Rick Perry and his team, and drove efforts to promote America’s historic energy progress under President Trump’s Administration and its contributions to economic prosperity and national security.
Prior to his service at DOE, Mr. Vande Beek served in various executive leadership roles at Travelport, Computer Associates, The Coca-Cola Company, Halliburton and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He also served as Director of Communication and Press Secretary for Dick Cheney during the 2000 Presidential Campaign.
Mr. Vande Beek has won several awards for his service in government including the United States Distinguished Civilian Service Medal.
He holds a B.A. in History from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA.
