Immigration Data and Statistics Collection

The Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS) carries out two main functions: to collect and disseminate to Congress and the public data and information useful in evaluating the social, economic, environmental, and demographic impact of immigration laws; and to establish standards of reliability and validity for immigration statistics collected by the Department’s operational Components.

  • Nonimmigrants Residing in the United States

The reports below present estimates of the size and characteristics of the resident nonimmigrant population in the United States. In the more recent reports, the estimates are daily averages for the 12-month period centered on January 1 of the given year. The term resident nonimmigrant refers to foreign nationals who are legally admitted into the United States for specific, temporary purposes and whose classes of admission are associated with residency (e.g., students and temporary workers, as opposed to tourists and business travelers). The characteristics analyzed include category of admission, country of citizenship, age, sex, and destination state. The estimates are derived from U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) administrative records of nonimmigrant arrivals and departures.

  • Refugees and Asylees: 2010

  • Year-end Monthly Statistical Reports Archive

A collection of discontinued year-end monthly statistical reports produced by the Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS). These reports were produced under the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) under the Department of Justice (DOJ) just prior to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The reports were discontinued shortly after OIS was integrated into DHS and all the information in the reports are now included into the current core reporting structure.

  • Yearbook of Immigration Statistics 1996 to 1999

The Yearbook of Immigration Statistics is a compendium of tables that provide data on foreign nationals who are granted lawful permanent residence (i.e., immigrants who receive a “green card”), admitted as temporary nonimmigrants, granted asylum or refugee status, or are naturalized. The Yearbook also presents data on immigration enforcement actions, including apprehensions and arrests, removals, and returns.
