Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA) Collection

The Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is a decision tool to identify and mitigate privacy risks that notifies the public what Personally Identifiable Information (PII) DHS is collecting, why the PII is being collected and how the PII will be collected, used, accessed, shared, safeguarded and stored.

Use the “Filter” field to search PIAs by keyword and select a “Topic” to narrow results.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) developed the Standard Management Analysis Reporting Tool (SMART) to create and compile reports pertaining to immigrant and nonimmigrant benefits. SMART creates reports by temporarily retrieving information from USCIS source systems, which have either aggregate or individual data. USCIS conducted this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to discuss the privacy risks and mitigations associated with replicating and temporarily retaining personally identifiable information (PII) in SMART to create reports.

USCIS is updating this privacy impact assessment PIA to provide notice regarding e-Request, a new service that allows customers to create a service request via www.uscis.gov, and to update the description of Case Status Service Online (CSSO). USCIS is publishing this update because these modifications affect the collection, use, and storage of personally identifiable information (PII).

  • DHS/USSS/PIA-002 USSS Protective Information eXchange

The Secret Service created the Targeted Violence Information Sharing System (TAVISS) to conduct name checks and determine whether a subject is of protective interest to any agency within the TAVISS network.  The Secret Service conducted this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) because TAVISS contains personally identifiable information (PII) regarding subjects of protective interest to the Secret Service and participating agencies in the network.

  • DHS/USSS/PIA-003 Protective Threat Management System (PTMS)

The Secret Service created and uses the Protective Research Information System Management (PRISM-ID) system to record information that assists the agency in meeting its protective mission, including the protection of the president, vice president, their immediate families, former presidents and first ladies, major candidates for the presidency and vice presidency, foreign heads of state visiting the United States, and other individuals authorized to receive Secret Service protection. This Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) was conducted because PRISM-ID collects personally identifiable information (PII).

  • DHS/USCIS/PIA-048 USCIS International Biometric Processing Services

Many countries now require biometric data from individuals filing applications for immigration related benefits. Several countries have partnered with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to collect the requisite biometrics and limited biographical information on behalf of their immigration services. On behalf of the country, USCIS collects biometric and biographic information at its 138 Application Support Centers and deletes the records immediately after it receives confirmation that the partner country has received the information. USCIS previously published DHS/USCIS/PIA-048, USCIS International Visa Project, to address USCIS collection of biometric and biographic information on behalf of other countries for international visa processing.
