First responders and others in the market for response robots needed a way to compare the actual abilities of those robots against each other. The Science and Technology Directorate's Capability Development Support Office of Standards (STN), in cooperation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), stepped in to make comparative evaluation of robots possible by creating a suite of Standard Test Methods for Response Robots. These test methods, based on input from many federal agencies and academic and professional organizations, and published through the ASTM International Committee on Homeland Security Applications, help organizations compare various robots against each other based on well defined, uniform testing with predictable, repeatable, and measurable results.
