PHILADELPHIA – Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Rand Beers today traveled to Philadelphia to deliver remarks at the 120th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference and Law Enforcement Education and Technology Exposition. During the remarks, Acting Secretary Beers underscored the important partnership DHS and their law enforcement partners share, including increasing information sharing, working to counter violent extremism, and combating cyber threats to the public and the nation’s critical infrastructure. 

“In just a few short years, we have worked to get ahead of emerging threats, and in doing so, have transformed how we work together,” said Acting Secretary Beers. “That transformation extends to how we share information, build our capabilities, combat threats in our communities, and address our shared challenges.” 

During his remarks, Acting Secretary Beers underscored the importance of information sharing and analysis, and enhancing our nation’s ability to identify, mitigate and respond to emerging threats. A cornerstone of this effort has been support for state and major urban area fusion centers. To date, DHS has deployed 96 Office of Intelligence and Analysis personnel to fusion centers throughout the country to coordinate with intelligence and law enforcement personnel.  

Acting Secretary Beers also highlighted the Department’s ongoing collaboration with partners at all levels of government to support state and local law enforcement to implement measures to help prevent and increase response capabilities to active shooter situations. This past January, the Department launched a new active shooter page to provide law enforcement and the public with resources on how to respond to active shooter incidents.  

Additionally, Acting Secretary Beers highlighted the Department’s efforts to create a safe, secure and resilient cyber environment. Throughout October, as part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, DHS and our partners are participating in events across the country to highlight different elements of cybersecurity, including mobile security, cyber workforce and education, cyber crime, and critical infrastructure security.
