Family Relationships

Release Date: February 4, 2021

At every stage of life, relationships with our spouses, children, and extended families are complex and evolving. They may offer joy one day and challenges another. Learning to manage stress and better understand our emotions and behaviors can help improve communication and strengthen relationships with the important people in our lives.

Building and maintaining healthy relationships takes time and effort. With the daily pressures of work, children, and chores, it can be easy to neglect your relationships and take your partner and other loved ones for granted. Sometimes for too long. Many people wait for a crisis before seeking help from a counselor when seeking help for small problems can help avoid a crisis altogether.

Couples counseling is designed to help couples identify and understand sources of conflict and develop skills to resolve these conflicts without blame. While it is best to go to couples therapy as a couple, you can go by yourself if your partner isn’t ready. Getting help through your Employee Assistance Program is a no-cost and risk-free way to test out couples and family therapy. Just call the toll-free number for your Component EAP to get started.

Your Employee Assistance Program is here to help

If you are experiencing challenges in a relationship, your Component Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you locate a couples counselor, mediation services, or other relationship resources. EAP can also offer assistance and counseling to your family members, including children.

In addition to counseling services, your Component EAP can also provide parenting tips or assist you and your family members with finding services for everyday life events like college scholarship information, summer camps, and eldercare resources. EAP assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information, contact your Component EAP, or send an email to worklife@hq.dhs.gov.
