(The below message is from the Department's Fed Feed Families Chair)
Dear Colleagues,
For many of us, the start of the summer is a chance to relax and enjoy the warm weather. For Americans dealing with food insecurity, particularly children who are out of school, it can be the most difficult time of the year. Food pantries and food banks often experience a decline in donations during the summer months, which impacts those already struggling. Through the Feds Feed Families campaign, DHS employees have a unique opportunity to help those in need.
There are many ways to contribute, and our Department is uniquely poised with a strong presence in local communities across the Nation. Last year, employees donated non-perishable items at work, traveled to farms to harvest crops (gleaning), and even donated freshly prepared food directly to local shelters. The Coast Guard was one of several components that donated over 100,000 pounds, allowing DHS to collect over one million pounds of food!
As Department Chair for the 2017 campaign, I commend you for your past participation, and invite you to make this year’s drive the most successful yet. Whether you choose to glean, use online donations, or bring in canned goods, know that your actions have the potential to change lives.
During the month of June, the Department collected 33,846 pounds. In July, DHS employees donated an additional 154,216 pounds, for a total of 188,062 pounds so far. Together I know we can continue our push through August to make this year’s campaign the best to date!
Sincerely,
Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz, U.S. Coast Guard
