Each year, the U.S. recognizes the contributions and sacrifices made by law enforcement through a week-long series of remembrances and events. President John F. Kennedy started the tradition in 1962 by declaring May 15 National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week which May 15 falls as National Police Week. More than 30 years later, President Bill Clinton amended the declaration to include direction that the U.S. flag be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15. This year, Police Week will run from May 13-21, 2017.
