WASHINGTON—Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson met with Italian Minister of Interior Angelino Alfano to discuss a range of homeland security-related issues, including efforts to facilitate lawful trade and travel, border security, and information sharing to enhance counterterrorism efforts.
Secretary Johnson and Minister Alfano discussed the European migration crisis and the current security situation in Europe following the terrorist attacks in Brussels, focusing on opportunities for the United States and Italy to enhance information sharing to support counterterrorism cooperation and the screening of migrants and asylum seekers. They also reviewed the Department’s recent measures to enhance the security of the Visa Waiver Program.
Secretary Johnson and Minister Alfano further discussed security issues of mutual concern, including European counterterrorism and border management capabilities, as well as cybersecurity. Secretary Johnson emphasized the strong cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to routinely share information with our intelligence and homeland security partners to ensure our collective security.
