Beyond the Border: Outreach

Beyond the Border articulates a shared approach to security in which both countries work together to address threats within, at, and away from our borders, while expediting lawful trade and travel.

Outreach events include:

May 21, 2013 (Washington, D.C.) – DHS briefed the Industry Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC) on Beyond the Border initiatives, including progress in harmonizing U.S. and Canadian trusted trader programs.  ITAC is a public-private partnership jointly managed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of United States Trade Representative that engages business leaders in formulating U.S. trade policy.

April 23-25, 2013 (Detroit, MI) – U.S. and Canadian Government representatives discussed border infrastructure and the Beyond the Border Action Plan at the United States-Canada Transportation Border Working Group Spring Plenary. 

April 5, 2013 (Potsdam, NY) – U.S. and Canadian Government representatives participated in a Beyond the Border panel hosted by Representative Bill Owens (NY) at Clarkson University.

February 4, 2013 (Washington, D.C.) – Presenters from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Canadian Privy Council Office discussed progress over the past year in implementing the Beyond the Border Action Plan and the Regulatory Cooperation Council Action Plan at an event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

November 27, 2012 (Washington, D.C.) – CBP Deputy Commissioner David Aguilar and Canada Border Services Agency President Luc Portelance discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan at the CBP East Coast Trade Symposium

November 19, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – DHS discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan’s implementation with the Canadian American Business Council.

November 15, 2012 (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) – CBP provided a brief at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region Winter Meeting in Idaho on progress in implementing the Beyond the Border Action Plan.

November 7-8, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – DHS addressed the Transportation Border Working Group (TBWG) on trade and travel facilitation efforts under the Beyond the Border Action Plan. 

October 30-31, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – DHS and Public Safety Canada presented on several Beyond the Border Action Plan initiatives at the 2012 SecureTech Conference. 

October 24, 2012 (Vancouver, British Columbia) – DHS, the U.S. Department of State, and the Canadian Privy Council Office briefed on the Beyond the Border Action Plan at an event hosted by the Vancouver Board of Trade.

August 4, 2012 (Chicago, Illinois) – DHS and the Canadian Privy Council Office participated in a panel discussion on the Beyond the Border Action Plan at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting in Chicago. 

July 30, 2012 (Buffalo, New York) – DHS testified before the House Homeland Security Committee, Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, on the Beyond the Border Action Plan and U.S. partnership with Canada at a field hearing titled “Beyond Borders: Are the Department of Homeland Security’s International Agreements Ensuring Actionable Intelligence to Combat Threats to the U.S. Homeland?”

July 16, 2012 (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) - DHS and the Canadian Privy Council Office provided an overview and updates on the Beyond the Border Action Plan at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Annual Summit. 

July 9, 2012 (Washington, D.C.) – DHS Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin and David Moloney of the Canadian Privy Council Office jointly discussed the first six months of progress in implementing the Beyond the Border Action Plan at an event hosted by the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Canada Institute.

June 28, 2012 (Minneapolis, MN) – DHS discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan at a public outreach event organized by the Federal Reserve of Minneapolis, the Canadian Consulate General, and the Humphrey School of Public Policy at the University of Minnesota.

June 22, 2012 (Detroit, MI) – DHS Assistant Secretary for the Private Sector Douglas A. Smith discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan with stakeholders at an event hosted by the Detroit Chamber of Commerce.

June 13, 2012 (Montreal, Quebec) – DHS Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan at the International Forum of the Americas, Montreal Conference.

May 24, 2012 (Toronto, Ontario) – Citizenship and Immigration Canada Minister Kenney, joined by Assistant Secretary David Heyman of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, hosted a stakeholder consultation on facilitating cross-border business.

May 16, 2012 (web) – Patty Cogswell of the U.S. National Security Staff, DHS Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin and David Moloney of the Canadian Privy Council Office participated in a web seminar to discuss the trade benefits resulting from the Beyond the Border Action Plan.

May 14, 2012 (Washington, D.C) – Secretary Napolitano, joined by Associate Deputy Minister Peter Sylvester of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, hosted a stakeholder consultation on facilitating cross-border business.

May 8-9, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson and DHS Assistant Secretary Alan Bersin participated in a conference hosted by the CAN/AM Border Trade Alliance to discuss the Beyond the Border Action Plan.

April 17-19, 2012 (Seattle, WA) – U.S. and Canadian Government personnel met with stakeholders to discuss cross-border trade, travel, and infrastructure issues at the Transportation Border Working Group.

March 22, 2012 (Cleveland, OH) – U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson provided the keynote address at the Canada-U.S. Law Institute Conference.

March 2, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – DHS Assistant Secretary Bersin provided keynote remarks on the Beyond the Border Action Plan at an event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

February 29, 2012 (Toronto, Ontario) – CBP Deputy Commissioner Winkowski and CBSA President Portelance led a Town Hall on the Beyond the Border Action Plan to discuss cross-border travel.

February 28, 2012 (Niagara Falls, NY) – CBP Deputy Commissioner Winkowski and CBSA President Portelance led a Town Hall on the Beyond the Border Action Plan to discuss trade and commercial cross-border activity.

February 10, 2012 (Seattle, WA) – DHS Assistant Secretary Heyman and Paul Haddow of the Canadian Privy Council Office discussed the Beyond the Border Action Plan at an event hosted by Western Washington University.

January 30, 2012 (Washington, D.C.) – DHS Assistant Secretary Alan Bersin and Assistant Secretary David Heyman as well as David Moloney of the Canadian Privy Council Office participated in a Beyond the Border Action Plan discussion at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

January 23, 2012 (Ottawa, Ontario) – DHS Assistant Secretary David Heyman and Public Safety Canada Assistant Deputy Minister Paul MacKinnon participated in a Beyond the Border Action Plan discussion at Carleton University.

January 12, 2012 (Washington, D.C) – DHS Assistant Secretary David Heyman briefed the National Governors Association on the Beyond the Border Action Plan.

December 8, 2011 (Washington, D.C.) – DHS Assistant Secretary David Heyman briefed Senate and House of Representatives staff on the Beyond the Border Action Plan.
