DHS Secretary and FEMA Administrator Travel to States Affected by Hurricane Irene

"Following visits today to North Carolina, Virginia and Vermont, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate will travel to New York and New Jersey on Wednesday, August 31, to survey ongoing recovery and response efforts on the ground following Hurricane Irene. Secretary Napolitano and Administrator Fugate will meet with local officials, first responders, and volunteers to reaffirm the federal government's continued commitment to working with our state, local and community partners and helping the communities and individuals affected by Hurricane Irene to rebuild and recovery. FEMA Deputy Administrator Rich Serino is traveling to New Jersey today, following meetings with emergency officials in Hartford, Connecticut. More details on tomorrow's trip will be released once they are available."

Secretaries Napolitano and Vilsack will visit Elizabeth City, N.C. to survey crop damage during an aerial tour of Tyrrell County, receive a briefing at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and participate in a media availability. Later, Secretaries Napolitano and Vilsack will travel to Richmond, Va. to visit the Commonwealth's EOC and meet with local officials, first responders, and volunteers to reaffirm the federal government's continued commitment to working with our state, local and community partners and help the communities and individuals affected by Hurricane Irene to rebuild and recover. While in Richmond they will join local officials for a media availability.

FEMA Administrator Fugate will join Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch in Burlington, Vt., for a tour of the storm damaged areas of the state via helicopter, and to meet with additional state and local officials working on the response and recovery efforts. Afterwards FEMA Administrator Fugate will join the group for a media availability at the Burlington International Airport.

FEMA Deputy Administrator Serino will travel to Hartford, Connecticut today to meet with state and local officials and assess damages, and later plans to travel to New Jersey. Additional details on Serino's trip will be released as they become available.
