  • Recommendations Memo Concerning Immigration Centers of America - Farmville

    CRCL conducted an investigation into conditions of detention for ICE detainees at the Immigration Centers of America - Farmville in Farmville, Virginia. CRCL’s virtual onsite investigation occurred on September 21-24, 2020 and was in response to complaints regarding conditions of detention, medical and mental health care, suicide prevention and intervention, sexual abuse and assault prevention, and environmental health and safety issues.

    January 13, 2021, DHS’s Office of the CIS Ombudsman hosted a public webinar to discuss how DHS combats human trafficking and forced labor in imported goods.

  • Green Light Law

    In response to New York State implementing the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act (Green Light Law), Acting Secretary Chad F. Wolf announced New York residents will no longer be eligible to apply for or renew their enrollment in certain Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) like Global Entry. The law prohibits the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) from sharing information with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), preventing DHS from fully vetting New York residents.

    The rapid growth of e-commerce has revolutionized the way goods are bought and sold, allowing for counterfeit and pirated goods to flood our borders and penetrate our communities and homes. Illicit goods trafficked to American consumers by e-commerce platforms and online third-party marketplaces threaten public health and safety, as well as national security. This illicit activity impacts American innovation and erodes the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers and workers.

    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, the Importation of Goods Produced with Forced Labor, and Child Sexual Exploitation articulates the Department’s long-term approach for combating these crimes and serves as a framework to prioritize resources and monitor progress. Additionally, this strategy supports the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, a Cabinet-level entity that coordinates federal efforts to combat human trafficking.

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued the following statement on safety and enforcement during Tropical Depression Imelda:

    U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are concerned about the flooding caused by Tropical Depression Imelda to southeast Texas. Our highest priority remains the preservation of life and safety. In consideration of these circumstances, there will be no immigration enforcement initiatives associated with evacuations or sheltering related to the storm, except in the event of a serious public safety threat.
