WASHINGTON—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today delivered remarks at the National Guard 2011 Joint Senior Leadership Conference—highlighting the Department’s partnership with the National Guard to respond and recover from disasters, and make our nation more safe, secure and resilient.

“The National Guard is a vital partner of DHS and I want to thank the men and women who serve in our National Guard for their service, sacrifice, and dedication,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We have had an unprecedented year of disaster response and recovery, and I commend the extraordinary contributions the National Guard has made throughout our nation.”

Since DHS was established in 2003, the Department has developed and maintained a close relationship with the National Guard. Together with FEMA, the National Guard has mobilized swiftly to assist in disaster preparation, help in search and rescue efforts, and facilitate the recovery of communities.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Secretary Napolitano also thanked the National Guardsmen and women as well as those veterans of the National Guard for their service and contributions to the country at home and abroad.
