MEXICO CITY—Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Rand Beers today traveled to Texas and Mexico. This morning, Acting Secretary Beers visited McAllen, Texas to inspect border security operations, meet with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees in the region, and receive briefings on the Administration’s efforts in securing the nation’s border and combating narcotics and weapons smuggling, while facilitating lawful travel and trade.
“At DHS, we are committed to working with our partners in border communities as well as Mexico to make sure that the entire Southwest border is secure while facilitating legal travel and trade that our economies rely on,” said Acting Secretary Beers. “The United States and Mexico have taken unprecedented steps in recent years to deepen our cooperation along our shared border by creating an environment in which our citizens and businesses continue to feel safe and secure, while reducing violence and increasing security.”
Acting Secretary Beers visited the Port of Hidalgo in McAllen, Texas where he received operational briefings from CBP and ICE, and participated in an aerial tour of the U.S.-Mexico border region.
Later, Acting Secretary Beers traveled to Mexico City where he met with Mexican officials to discuss areas of continued cooperation between the two nations. The United States and Mexico continue to pursue programs and initiatives that are founded upon the principle of co-responsibility for border management, including deepening collaboration between our customs agencies, developing and expanding trusted trader programs, and developing innovative approaches to expediting the legitimate movement of goods and services between our two countries.
An example of this collaboration is the support for each nation’s respective trusted shipper programs, including CBP’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and Mexico’s New Scheme of Certified Companies. C-TPAT is a voluntary public-private sector partnership program that strengthens cargo security throughout the international supply chain by working closely with importers, carriers, consolidators, licensed customs brokers, and manufacturers.
Tomorrow, Acting Secretary Beers will join Vice President Joe Biden and other U.S. officials in Mexico City, Mexico to participate in the U.S.-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue.
