DHS works with all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and individual citizens to make our nation more resilient to acts of terrorism, cyber attacks, pandemics, and catastrophic natural disasters.

    In the wake of multiple large-scale disasters that plagued the U.S. in 2017, DHS initiated a more focused effort to formalize a Department-wide process that integrates activities for incorporating resilience into our critical infrastructure.

  • S&T NGFR – Birmingham Shaken Fury Operational Experimentation

    For NGFR’s last operational experiment, the program has partnered with Birmingham-area public safety agencies in a HAZMAT and Search and Rescue incident response resulting from an earthquake scenario. This OpEx is affiliated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 2019 Shaken Fury exercise hosted by FEMA and will focus on a simulated major earthquake in Memphis, Tennessee that will impact middle America including the state of Alabama. The OpEx is also an opportunity for Birmingham-area public safety agencies to enhance their mission capabilities in advance of the World Games which the city of Birmingham will host in June 2021.

  • Primary Mission Essential Functions (PMEFs) by Department

    Primary Mission Essential Functions (PMEFs) are those functions that need to be continuous or resumed within 12 hours after an event and maintained for up to 30 days or until normal operations can be resumed. PMEFs are validated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Community Coordinator.
