Expertise

The Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) delivers scientific and technical expertise to optimize decision-making, enable technical development, and enhance acquisition effectiveness for the homeland security enterprise. S&T’s subject matter experts serve as trusted advisors throughout the Department and beyond—ensuring technical and scientific advancements are harnessed for cutting-edge solutions to operational challenges.

S&T’s work in systems engineering and standards, test and evaluation, and operational analysis has made S&T a trusted resource. S&T works with government labs, like the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and academic partners to conduct thorough testing and evaluation and ensure performance standards are consistently applied. S&T also provides technology testing and evaluation to better understand and mitigate homeland security threats, especially for the first responder community. S&T’s laboratory staff and partners provide a critical scientific interface to accelerate delivery and deployment of technologies and systems.

  • National Laboratories

    Offers a broad laboratory network that includes in-house laboratories with capabilities aligned to enduring and strategic mission needs of DHS.

  • Technology Centers

    Provide an enduring capability of science and engineering expertise and conduct basic and applied research into emerging and future science and technology.

  • Test & Evaluation

    Serves as the principal advisor on test and evaluation to the Office of the Secretary and Component leadership and is the primary liaison with outside parties regarding test and evaluation matters.

  • Systems Engineering and Standards

    Assesses the complexity, risks, and operational and technical areas of potential solutions for DHS programs, and identifies relevant standards and test methods to address mission needs.

  • Technology Scouting

    Provides summary reports to support program planning and inform buy, build, or adapt decisions.
     

  • Operations Research

    Helps DHS Components to identify their capability gaps, perform mission/requirements analysis, and operations analysis to improve operations.

  • Technology Clearinghouse

    Provides its stakeholders with curated information to aid in the development of innovative technology solutions for homeland security.
