S&T Announces Almost $2 Million in SBIR Awards

Washington, D.C. – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program today announced a total of $1,998,176.66 in competitive research awards for 20 small businesses located across 12 states. Each business was awarded approximately $100,000 in Phase I funding to prove feasibility of their concept over a six-month period in a specific area of research. Awards were made in these six topic areas:

  • DNA and latent fingerprint collection from same sample
  • Low-cost, disposable, tamper-proof bolt seal
  • Enhanced distributed denial of service defense
  • Privacy protecting analytics for the Internet of Things
  • A wearable communications hub designed to streamline and improve first responder communication capabilities
  • Canine mounted track and transmit device

The solicitation, released in December 2014, included the above topics developed by S&T program managers to address the research and development needs of DHS components and the greater homeland security enterprise.  At the completion of Phase I, Phase II awards may be made to small business concerns on the basis of the results of their Phase I project, and the scientific merit, technical merit, and commercialization potential of the submitted Phase II proposal. The objective of Phase II is to continue the R/R&D effort from the completed Phase I.

The DHS S&T SBIR Program is a competitive contract awards program initiated in 2004 to increase the participation of innovative and creative U.S. small businesses in federal research and development initiatives and to increase private sector commercialization of SBIR-funded solutions.
