Responder News: National Professional Development Summit Seeking Fire/EMS Personnel

Release Date: April 19, 2017

The National Professional Development Summit (NPDS) is scheduled for June 14-17, 2017 at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The summit will feature presentations related to fire training and resources, higher education, and fire prevention and protection within the scope of professional development. Attendance is free, and guests have until May 5, 2017 to register for the event.

Candidates will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The summit is open to those active in fire and emergency services professional development, including state fire training representatives, official representatives of regionally accredited academic fire programs, national and state fire associations, fire marshals, fire prevention and protection personnel and/or educators, and those responsible for training fire and emergency services personnel.

In addition to presentations on a variety of fire and emergency service issues, NPDS will offer two staff rides on June 17. The first staff ride is headed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to discuss contemporary training and management issues in the context of the battle’s strategic operations. Lunch will be provided.  An alternative staff ride scheduled for the same time and date will be going to Shelter Systems in Westminster, Maryland. This event will feature a facility tour and information about truss and laminated heavy timber construction.

Those not taking either staff ride can elect to attend an eight-hour “Train the Trainer” certificate course on June 17 provided by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium and West Virginia University. This class will cover response to gaseous-fueled, electric-drive, biofuel, and hydrogen vehicles.

Seating is limited for staff rides and the certificate course. As such, spots need be reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
While there are no stipends or travel reimbursements for the NPDS and related workshops, free lodging and scheduled bus transportation to and from Baltimore-Washington International Airport will be provided.
