Explosives Detection

Improvised Explosives Device (IED) explodingThe Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) explosives detection programs develop new technologies and systems to protect our citizens and our country's infrastructure against the devastating effects of non-nuclear explosives, by seeking innovative approaches in detection and in countermeasures. S&T provides concepts, science, technologies, and systems that increase protection from explosives, and promotes the development of field equipment, technologies, and procedures to interdict weapons and explosive threats.


The following programs support this mission:



S&T works with universities, industry, federal departments including the Departments of Defense, Justice and Transportation as well as other DHS components and numerous state and local law enforcement agencies in the Homeland Security Enterprise.
